Our repeater is located on GMRS Repeater Channel 19 (often RPT-19, or Channel 27), which most quality GMRS radio come preprogrammed with, like the Wouxun radios we recommend. Note that Channel 19 and RPT-19 are two different channels... The first "Channel 19" in your radio is likely the "simplex" channel (used for direct radio to radio traffic), whereas you'll find the correct "RPT-19" or "Channel 27" farther down your frequency list. Feel free to call if you have any difficulty programming your radio for our repeater. My cell phone number is (760) 887-3744
You would only need to set the input tone, often referred to as "TX-DCS" in many common radio menu systems... Our repeater uses a digital input tone of 072. This may appear as "D072N" under your TX-DCS menu item.. Note this is not the same as an analog input tone, commonly referred to as "TX-CTCSS". TX-CTCSS should be set to "OFF".. Also note that Midland radios have a proprietary tone code. If you're programming a Midland radio, you would need to consult your manual to cross reference your proprietary tone to Digital DCS 072.
GMRS Repeater Channel 19 input (transmit) frequency is 467.650, and receive frequency of 462.650... This can get confusing, but think of it this way: The repeater listens on the input frequency of 467.650 for your transmission... The repeater then repeats your transmission on your receive frequency of 462.650. Clear as mud? Most radios have the ability to change the display from channel number to frequency display, and you can watch your radio switch between these frequencies during your conversation, making it a little more clear.
Our repeater also has an output tone set, which is also DCS 072, same as the input tone, but it is optional.. Some radios call these privacy tones, and while don't offer true privacy, will possibly minimize radio chatter you may hear on our frequency. To enable it, set "RX-DCS" to 072, or D072N, in your radio menu system.
GMRS Repeater Channel 19 is also shared with the standard FRS/GMRS Channel 19, which is the same frequency as our "input frequency". Therefore, without your RX-DCS tone set, you would hear our repeater, as well as anyone else who may be using the more common simplex (non repeater) channel 19. If you hear people on RPT-19 but can't talk back to them, this is likely the culprit... If you don't want to hear them, set RX-DCS to 072 in your radio menu. This is telling your radio you only want to hear traffic from our repeater, not the simplex users. FYI with both your input and output digital sones set, they won't likely hear you either, unless they happen to have this exact digital tone programmed as well.
Our repeater is located on Indio Hill, just north of the I-10 freeway in the east Coachella Valley, atop a 150 foot radio tower. Coverage is strongest on the east side of the Coachella Valley, but spans from North Palm Springs across the valley all the way down to the Salton Sea. Members have reported contacting the repeater as far west as the Morongo Casino, and as far east as Chiriaco Summit... See the coverage map above for more detail. Our repeater is also supported by a robust diesel generator system, so our communications will be solid even in the event of a complete power outage
